Lady Rams To Face Norfolk State in Final Road Game of the Season

Feb. 23, 2009

GAME NOTES

NORFOLK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-22) will get one last chance to pick up a road win when the team takes on the Norfolk State Lady Spartans (1-22, 1-12 MEAC) at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. Monday evening. The Lady Rams have been some hospitable guests all season long with an 0-11 record in road games this season, but will look to be the spoilers at Norfolk State.

The Lady Rams have had their struggles on the road with opponents averaging 67.o points per game in WSSU road games while the Lady Rams are averaging just 48.7 points per game in road games. The Lady Rams will be riding a wave of momentum heading into Monday’s game after some impressive offensive outings in recent efforts. The Lady Rams have scored at least 59 points in six of their last eight games and will look to keep things going against the Lady Spartans.

The WSSU tandem of redshirt-sophomore guard MaLisa Bumpus and freshman forward Jordhan Peterson will look to put on a solid performance in front of their hometown crowd. Both players hail from the Tidewater area and were former teammates at Norfolk Collegiate School. Bumpus is currently the Lady Rams’s leading scorer at 12.9 points per game this season while Peterson has worked her way into the starting lineup in the last three games. The former Oaks will look to impress the hometown crowd when they take on the Lady Spartans.

Norfolk State will have a bit of momentum of their own as the team picked up the first win of the season on Saturday when they defeated the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 75-52 at Echols Hall. NSU senior guard Raychele Payne led the charge for the Lady Spartans with a career-high 36 points. The Lady Rams will look to shut down Payne and the rest of the Lady Spartans when the two teams tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
