Raleigh, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams hope that the glass slipper that they put on last evening continues to carry them to victory on Tuesday as they prepare to face the CIAA Western Division's top-seeded Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University in the final game of the night at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC in 2005 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament action.
The Lady Rams, who looked like a rejuvenated team last evening, turning a four-point first-half deficit into a 12-point lead that they would never relinquish, en route to a 66-55 win over the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University in the final game of Women's Tournament first-round action.
Shalonda Carter showed the doubters that left her off of the All-CIAA team that they made a big mistake in doing so as she recorded a game-high 25 points in addition to pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds in the Lady Rams win.
WSSU did something that they had not been able to do during their final 11 games of the season, as they held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half of play.
The win earns the Lady Rams a chance to exact revenge on a team that has proven to be their nemesis over the last three seasons, as they will now face the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University, a team that has earned the past three CIAA Western Division regular-season crowns.
The Lady Broncos have won six of the last eight games versus the Lady Rams, including three consecutive victories, as WSSU hasn't earned a win over Fayetteville State since the first meeting of the 2003-04 season.
WSSU and Fayetteville State met twice during the 2004-05 regular-season with the Lady Broncos coming out ahead in a pair of very close contests.
The Lady Broncos won the first meeting of the season on February 1st, 2005 by the score of 83-76, needing overtime to do so. Fayetteville State would complete the regular-season sweep only 19 days later as they earned an 83-82 victory on February 20th, 2005 at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, NC on a free throw with only two seconds to play, after a costly Lady Ram turnover.
WSSU will look towards the strength of their dominating inside game as Shalonda Carter will carry her double-double average into the game looking to provide WSSU the spark necessary to defeat the very successful Lady Broncos.
Tip-off time for the contest will be 9:00 PM at the RBC Center. There is no television coverage of the game. However, WSNC 90.5 FM will broadcast the game live on the radio and on the internet with Bill Franklin, the "Voice of the Rams" calling the play by play.
