BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams Bowling team opened the 2012-13 season in a big way with an impressive effort at the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Divisional Bowling Meet #1 this weekend. The Lady Rams finished the weekend with an impressive 13-2 overall record that included a 9-1 record in team match play and a 4-1 record in Baker games play.
The Lady Rams opened the three-day event with some stellar team-match play, posting a perfect 5-0 record. The team opened the day defeating Livingstone (724-586) and followed the effort with a close win over Fayetteville State (840-724). From there, the Lady Rams cruised with wins over Johnson C. Smith (749-524), Saint Augustine's (776-647), and Shaw (737-570).
The momentum carried over into the second day as the team posted four straight wins, defeating Shaw (771-510). The team took its only team match play loss of the weekend with a 684-764 loss to Saint Augustine's. The Lady Rams rebounded from the loss with three straight wins, defeating Johnson C. Smith (637-553), Fayetteville State (744-690), and Livingstone (716-558). With the effort, the Lady Rams ended team match play with a 9-1 record.
It was WSSU sophomore Raven Forest who led the way for the Lady Rams as she finished team match play with 1,463 total pins and averaging 162.56 for the weekend. WSSU freshman Tia Edgerton added 1,406 total pins and averaged 156.22 for the weekend. Forrest finished the weekend with the 11th highest average for the conference.
The team's strong play carried over into Baker games play, Sunday where the Lady Rams posted a 4-1 record. The team opened the day with a 3-1 win over Johnson C. Smith and a clutch 2-2 win over Saint Augustine's that WSSU won by virtue of higher total pins (519-516). From there, the team rolled to a 4-0 win over Shaw, followed by a 3-1 win over Livingstone. The Lady Rams took their sole Baker games loss of the day with a 1-3 loss to Fayetteville State.
