Lady Rams Fight Hard; Finish 23rd at Morgan State Invitational

Feb. 17, 2009

BALTIMORE, MD - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (13-64) had a strong finish on the second day of the Morgan State Invitational. After some struggles on the first day, the Lady Rams finished strong with a 23rd place team finish and a Baker match win over #19 St. Francis.

The Lady Rams posted a 1-4 record in Baker match play at the tournament. However, the squad picked up a huge feather in their cap when the team opened Baker match play with a 611-598 win over #19 St. Francis. The Lady Rams struggled over their next three matches with losses to Bowie State (499-570), #9 Central Missouri (462-798), and Fayetteville State (522-695). The Lady Rams stepped up their efforts in the final match with #1 Vanderbilt, but could not hold on in the 610-782 loss.

"We had some good efforts at times in this tournament, especially against Vanderbilt, the top team in the country," WSSU head bowling coach Corey Beers said. "We were right there for three sets against Vanderbilt, but we just couldn't hold out."

Lady Ram junior Christina McDowell led the way for the Lady Rams with 778 pin total for the event and finished with a 155.6 average. She finished 70th at the tournament.

The Lady Rams will get another shot at the Commodores when the team takes part in the Holiday Classic in Bessemer, Ala. next weekend.
