Sept. 24, 2004
Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams' bowling team can not rest on the laurels of last season's success. That, and the parity of talent among the CIAA's bowling elite, was evident on Friday afternoon in Charlotte, NC as the Lady Rams were saddled with a pair of losses as they closed out the first day of competition in the 2004-05 season posting a 3-2 record.
The Lady Rams, who posted a 59-15 record in 2003-04 and were selected to participate in the 2004 NCAA Women's Bowling National Championships, split a pair of matches with the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University and were handed a loss in the first match of two by the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University.
The day started well enough for the Lady Rams as they won their opening match of the season, defeating NCCU by the score of 674-614. However, the Lady Eagles were not to be outdone, as they roared back and stole a win from WSSU in the second match 664-662 to earn the first-day split.
The next two matches that the Lady Rams would bowl saw WSSU record a pair of victories with relative ease over the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College.
WSSU won by 14 total pins in the first match of two, by the score of 689-675, and completed the sweep by defeating SAC 637-614 in the second match.
The final match of the day would see the Lady Rams bowl the first of two total matches versus Fayetteville State (with the second to be bowled on Saturday morning).
Though the Lady Rams started the season with a win, they could not finish the first day posting a similar victory as the Lady Broncos handed WSSU an 84-pin defeat, 762-678.
After the first day of competition, the Lady Rams sit at 3-2 overall (3-2 CIAA) and will have the opportunity to exact revenge against the Lady Broncos beginning at 9:00 am at George Pappas Park Lanes in Charlotte, NC.
