Durham, NCM - Day one of the 2004 CIAA Bowling Championships started less than spectacularly for the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams bowling team as they posted a 2-3 record on Sunday afternoon at AMF Durham Lanes in Durham, NC.
The Lady Rams, who are a favorite to capture the 2004 CIAA Bowling crown, stumbled on the first day of competition as they fell in defeat to Bowie State University, Shaw University, and Virginia State University.
WSSU opened the morning with an easy 841-645 victory over the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College before going on to tally their second consecutive win of the day in the very next match over the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University (812-792).
Sitting at 2-0 on the morning, the Lady Rams looked to be well on their way to a perfect opening-day record, as they have done four times this season. However, it was not to be as Virginia State handed WSSU a 764-725 upset in the third match of the day.
Following the loss to Virginia State, the Lady Rams fell to Shaw 907-763 and then closed out the afternoon with an 844-754 loss to Bowie State.
With their 2-3 record, the Lady Rams will advance to Monday's second round where they will face off against the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College as they begin the Baker Match portion of the championships.
