WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams opened home field on a high note, rallying for a 5-4 win over the Saint Andrew's University Knights, Thursday afternoon. After falling behind the Knights twice, the Lady Rams staged a late rally to pick up the win in their first home game of the season.
The Lady Rams took the win by scoring three unanswered runs in the final two innings of play, capped by an RBI double by junior hitter Francesca Edgerton in the sixth inning that sealed the win. For the game, the Lady Rams recorded seven total hits, with junior Britney Cato and freshman Monet Daly recording two hits each. Cato also added four RBI for the game as well.
The team got off to a slow start as Saint Andrew's scored a pair of runs in the first three innings, crossing the plate once in the first and third innings. The Lady Rams had an answer for their foes, however, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning when Cato hit a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game, 2-2. Saint Andrew's would answer in the fifth inning with back-to-back scores in the fifth inning to put the Lady Rams behind by two runs once again. However, Cato answered with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game once again, 4-4 and set the stage for Edgerton's clutch RBI-double to left centerfield that turned out to be the game winner.
With the win, the Lady Rams pick up their first home win of the season. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
