KUTZTOWN, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (32-18) gave it their all, but the team came up just a bit short in a 1-0 loss to the #3 Kutztown Bears (46-4) in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament, Friday afternoon. The loss came at the slimmest of possible margins as both teams played some stellar defense in the hard-fought game.
The Lady Rams and the Bears combined for seven hits in the game with four total errors. WSSU finished the game with two hits and two fielding errors in the game. WSSU freshman shortstop Brittany Rich led the way for the Lady Rams with both WSSU hits in the game, including a double.
The sole run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning when the Golden Bears scored on an RBI single. The one run was all that was needed as WSSU only managed to get one baserunner to third base after that. WSSU junior pitcher Brittany Lane reached first base on a seventh-inning walk, but a double play ended the Lady Rams' threat.
Lane (13-5) took the pitching loss with a solid effort. She allowed just five hits and only one earned run in the game. She allowed two walks with two strikeouts.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to the loser's bracket where they will take on the Indiana (Pa.) Hawks in a 1:00 p.m. elimination game tomorrow afternoon.
