KUTZTOWN, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (32-19) gave it their all, but the team could not get past the Indiana (Pa.) Fighting Hawks (30-13-1) in the elimination round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament. The loss ended the season for the Lady Rams, but could not overshadow a great season by the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams gave a great effort in the loss with four total hits and a run scored in the game. However, the Lady Rams struggled with a pair of fielding errors that allowed a pair of IUP runs. WSSU junior infielder Nikki Lynch led the way for the Lady Rams with a two-for-three effort at the plate. Freshmen Monet Daly and Bria Jones also added a hit each. Daly recorded an RBI in the game.
Things got tough early for the Lady Rams as the team allowed three runs to the Crimson Hawks in the first three innings. The Lady Rams responded with a third inning run of their own in the bottom of the third inning when Daly hit an RBI single that scored fellow freshman Francesca Edgerton.
The run left the Lady Rams within reach of the Hawks, 3-1. However, things got tough when they team allowed three sixth-inning runs, including an RBI single and a pair of unearned runs to leave the final score 6-1.
WSSU junior pitcher Brittany Lane (13-6) took the pitching loss, going all seven innings in the game with eight hits allowed and two strikeouts. She also finished the game with four walks.
With the loss, the Lady Rams end the 2012 season with a 32-19 overall record and their second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship and CIAA Southern Division championship.
