Lady Rams Fall Short in 8-7 Loss to Mars Hill

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-2) fell victim to a late rally in a tough 8-7 loss to the Mars Hill Lions (2-0), Saturday afternoon. After taking a 6-4 fourth-inning lead, the Lady Rams allowed four runs to the Lions to take the tough extra-inning loss.

The Lady Rams took the tough loss in spite of some impressive performances both at the plate and in the field. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 11 hits in the game, but were hampered by four fielding errors. Four WSSU batters recorded two hits each in the game. Senior pitcher Brittany Lane led the way with two hits and a pair of RBI, including a solo home run. Sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman, senior infielder Nikki Lynch, and senior outfielder Shantel Haskins added two hits each.

The two teams got things going early with both teams scoring twice in the first inning. The Lady Rams answered the Lions' two opening inning runs with when Lynch scored on a passed ball and Freeman drove in senior infielder Britney Cato on an RBI single. The Lady Rams kept things going in the second inning when Cato drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to put WSSU ahead 3-2.

Mars Hill would answer in the third inning with a pair of scores to go ahead 4-3. Still, the Lady Rams had another answer when Lane homered to center field to tie the game. The team would strike twice again in the inning when with an RBI single by sophomore infielder Bria Jones, followed by a score on a wild pitch to put the Lady Rams ahead 6-4.

From there, the Lady Rams would go cold without a score over the next three innings. In the seventh inning, the Lions added a pair of scores on a two-RBI single to tie the game and send it into extra innings. From there, things got tough for the Lady Rams as Mars Hill scored a pair of extra inning runs. In the extra inning, the Lady Rams managed just one run when Lynch drove in a run on an RBI sacrifice fly.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 0-2 to open the season. The team will return to action, Tuesday when they head to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on the Pfeiffer Falcons.
