MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-3) took another close loss as the team fell, 4-3 at Pfeiffer (1-0), Tuesday afternoon. After taking a 3-3 tie into the seventh inning, the Lady Rams fell victim to some clutch hitting by the Falcons that ended the game for WSSU.
The loss came in spite of a solid overall performance by the Lady Rams as the team notched seven hits with just one fielding error. However, the Lady Rams could not get the offense when they needed it as the team was held scoreless for the final three innings of the game. WSSU sophomore catcher Bria Jones led the way for the Lady Rams with a two-for-four effort at the plate with a run scored. She was joined by five other WSSU players to record one hit each in the game.
The Lady Rams struck early in the game when junior infielder Tanaya Pettus scored on a Pfeiffer fielding error. She was joined in the dugout by senior infielder Nikki Lynch, who scored on a sacrifice bunt by junior Andreya O'Brien. The Lady Rams' only other score of the game came in the fourth inning when Jones hit an RBI single to third base that scored senior pitcher Brittany Lane.
Pfeiffer would add a first inning run as well as a pair of third inning runs to leave the game tied at 3-3 and set the stage for the dramatic seventh inning that saw the Lady Rams take the walk-off loss.
WSSU senior pitcher Brittany Lane (0-3) took the pitching loss, throwing six innings with 10 hits allowed and recording eight strikeouts.
The same two teams would meet later in the day to close out the doubleheader. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
