RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (11-10, 5-0 CIAA) returned to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with a bang, taking a 12-0 win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lions (2-1, 0-1 CIAA), Saturday morning. The win improved the team to a perfect 5-0 in CIAA play and gave the Lady Rams their second straight victory in as many days.
WSSU junior infielder Tanaya Pettus led the way for the Lady Rams with a three-for-three effort at the plate with four runs scored. Junior designated player Andreya O'Brien also had a strong day with a two-for-four effort with two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman also added a pair of RBI as well.
The Lady Rams got things started early with three first inning runs. After scoring on a Lincoln (Pa.) throwing error, the Lady Rams scored on back-to-back plays. The first was and RBI ground-out by O'Brien, followed by scoring on a Lincoln (Pa.) passed ball. The team got back into the scoring column in the third inning when Pettus scored on a passed ball, followed by an O'Brien score on a wild pitch. Another Lions fielding error allowed the third WSSU score of the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Lady Rams scored on a two-RBI single by Freeman, followed by an RBI ground out by senior infielder Olivia McDonald. Finally, junior Yasmin Lee added an RBI ground out of her own. The Lady Rams closed the scoring in the fifth inning when O;'Brien hit a two-RBI double that scored Pettus and senior infielder Nikki Lynch.
WSSU sophomore Monet Daly took home the pitching win with five innings of work. She recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits and a walk in the impressive performance.
