BREVARD, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (19-14) had to dig deep to pull out a 1-0 extra-inning victory at Brevard (13-22), Friday afternoon. In a game that saw some great pitching and defense by both teams, the Lady Rams battled their way to the clutch win; the team's third straight.
The game turned out to be a pitching duel between WSSU senior Brittany Lane (10-7) and Brevard's Jamie Hroback (6-10) as the two pitchers combined to allow just three total hits in the game. The Lady Rams totaled two hits in the game while Lane allowed just one hit to the Tornados. For the game, Lane finished with nine strikeouts, no walks, and no earned runs allowed.
Junior outfielder Andreya O'Brien and sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman were the only WSSU players to record hits in the game. Freeman finished the game with a one-for-three effort while O'Brien went one-for-four.
It was senior third base Nikki Lynch that drove in the winning run when she hit a ninth-inning sacrifice fly that scored sophomore second base Monet Daly, who reached third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Bria Jones.
The two teams would go on to meet in another classic game to complete the doubleheader. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
