BREVARD, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (20-14) held on for a clutch 8-6 extra inning win over the Brevard Tornados (13-23), Friday afternoon to complete a doubleheader sweep. For the second straight game, the Lady Rams had to show their resolve to take an extra-inning victory over the talented Tornados.
The Lady Rams broke out their bats for the second game of the doubleheader, totaling 14 hits as a team. The Lady Rams also benefitted from five Brevard fielding errors to score five unearned runs in the win. WSSU senior catcher Nikki Lynch led the way for the team with a three-for-for effort at the plate with a run scored and a game-high four RBI. Five other WSSU players recorded two hits each as well.
The Lady Rams opened the scoring in the third inning when Lynch hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Bria Jones. Lynch would in turn, score later in the inning on a Brevard throwing error. After allowing three Tornado runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Rams added a sixth-inning score to tie the game, 3-3 when Lynch drove in sophomore Monet Daly. Both teams would score three seventh-inning runs to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, it was sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman's sacrifice bunt that scored junior shortstop Tanaya Pettus. Senior Britney Cato would add an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle to score fellow senior Andreya O'Brien.
WSSU senior Brittany Lane (11-7) took the pitching victory, going all eight innings and allowing eight hits with four strikeouts and just two earned runs.
With the win, the Lady Rams push their current streak to four straight wins. The team will return home, tomorrow to host the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Washington Park.
