WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (21-14, 10-0 CIAA) broke out early to take a 7-1 win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (10-25, 8-3 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams scored all seven runs in the first three innings and played some solid defense to hold off the feisty Lady Broncos for their fifth straight win.
The Lady Rams had a strong day at the plate with seven team hits in the game and no fielding errors in the game. WSSU sophomore Monet Daly led the way with two hits and two runs scored in the game while fellow sophomore Mariha Freeman added a pair of hits of her own with a run scored.
The Lady Rams took advantage of FSU miscues to take the win with four unearned runs coming from a pair of Lady Bronco fielding errors. Back-to-back fielding errors, followed by a passed ball allowed four first inning runs by the Lady Rams. The team came back in the second inning to add another run when senior third base Nikki Lynch hit an RBI triple to score Daly for the second time of the day. The team wrapped up their scoring in the third inning when senior first base Brittney Cato hit an RBI triple that drove in Freeman, followed by an RBI groundout by senior outfielder Shantel Haskins scored Cato.
From there, both teams clamped down on defense to take the 7-1 score through the final four innings of play.
WSSU senior Brittany Lane (11-7) took the pitching win, going all seven innings and allowing just four hits in the game. She finished with eight strikeouts, a pair of walks, and one earned run allowed.
The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader with an exciting game two. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
