RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (25-15, 14-1 CIAA) took their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) loss of the season when the team took a 7-6 loss to the Shaw Lady Bears (14-20, 9-8 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. The loss was the first CIAA Southern Division loss since the 2011 season.
The loss came in spite of a great hitting effort by the Lady Rams who totaled 10 hits in the game and benefitted from four Shaw fielding errors. Sophomore Monet Daly added another great effort with a two-for-four performance at the plate with a run scored. Fellow sophomore Mariha Freeman also had a strong day with a one-for-two effort with two runs scored. Senior outfielder Shantel Haskins added four RBI with a two-RBI homer.
The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a first inning run, followed by two fourth-inning runs. WSSU benefitted from a first inning Shaw fielding error to score the first run of the game. Haskins drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI ground out in the fourth inning. The Lady Rams allowed four inning runs to the Lady Bears to fall behind, 3-4. The team answered in the fifth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Bria Jones. However, the team allowed another Shaw run to remain behind 4-5 in the fifth inning.
The Lady Rams went back up when Haskins hit a sixth-inning two run home run to go ahead 6-5. However, the Lady Bears tied the game with a sixth-inning run and set the stage for a thrilling seventh inning. The Lady Rams went scoreless in the top of the inning and allowed a walkoff RBI single by the Lady Bears that ended the game.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 14-1 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, Wednesday when they host the Brevard College Tornadoes, Wednesday afternoon.
