WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (25-16) couldn't get the runs across the plate in the tough 7-4 loss to the Brevard Tornados (14-29), Wednesday afternoon at South Park Field. The Lady Rams were able to get hits in the game, but could not overcome some fielding miscues and an aggressive Tornado team.
The Lady Rams were strong at the plate with eight total hits in the game. WSSU senior outfielder Andreya O'Brien went a team-best two-for-three at the plate with an RBI while fellow senior Britney Cato added a two-for-three effort at the plate as well with a double.
The Lady Rams struck first with an opening inning run on an RBI sacrifice bunt by junior infielder Tanaya Pettus that put the team ahead 1-0. After allowing a Brevard third-inning run, the Lady Rams answered with a run of their own when O'Brien hit an RBI single through the left side to stay ahead 2-1.
Things got tough for the Lady Rams in the fifth inning when the team allowed three Brevard runs to fall behind 4-2. The team answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Monet Daly scored on Tornado wild pitch. After a sixth-inning failed pickoff attempt and a fielding error allowed a pair of Brevard runs to put the Lady Rams down 6-3, the Lady Rams attempted a rally with a Daly RBI ground out that scored senior outfielder Shantel Haskins. The team allowed another seventh-inning run to the Tornados and was held scoreless to finish the day with the 7-4 loss.
WSSU junior pitcher Yasmin Lee (8-7) took the pitching loss, going 5.2 innings with 10 hits allowed and two earned runs. Senior Brittany Lane came in for 1.1 innings and allows one hit and an earned run.
The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
