ETTRICK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (27-17) began their quest for a third straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship in style with a 9-1 win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (8-18), Thursday afternoon. The Lady Rams combined some potent offense with some strong defense to finish the game in just five innings.
After scoring three runs in the first three innings of the game, the Lady Rams broke out for six fourth-inning runs to claim the five-inning victory. As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with 10 hits in five innings with three players recording two hits each in the game. Sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman led the way with a two-for-two effort with two runs scored. Senior infielder Britney Cato added two hits in three at-bats with a run scored and two RBI. Senior infielder Nikki Lynch added three RBI on one hit as well.
Things got started in the second inning when Cato hit a single to center field that drove in Freeman to put the Lady Rams ahead 1-0. Lynch hit a two-RBI double in the third inning to score sophomore catcher Bria Jones and sophomore infielder Monet Daly to go ahead 3-0.
The team broke things open in the fourth inning when the team scored six runs. Cato got things going with an RBI single to center field that scored Freeman once again. Daly followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that drove in Cato. Jones followed up the effort with a fielder's choice that drove in senior outfielder Shantel Haskins. Lynch picked up her third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly. Jones added the next score on a Lincoln (Pa.) fielding error and the final WSSU score came when Pettus scored on a Lincoln (Pa.) passed ball. The effort left the Lady Rams ahead 9-0 heading into the fifth inning. After allowing a fifth-inning run to the Lions, the Lady Rams closed out the 9-1 five-inning victory.
WSSU junior pitcher Yasmin Lee (9-7) took the pitching victory, going all five innings with three hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts.
