INSTITUTE, WV – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (28-20) couldn't quite get things going when the team took a tough 6-2 loss to the West Virginia State Yellowjackets (38-11), Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Rams looked to overcome some early struggles, but a late rally was not quite enough for the team as they took their third straight loss.
As a team, the Lady Rams managed five hits in the game. Senior pitcher Brittany Lane led the way with a one-for-three effort from the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Senior Nikki Lynch also added an RBI. Senior outfielder Shantel Haskins and sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman added a hit each as well.
The Lady Rams allowed a pair of first inning runs to the Yellowjackets, followed by two runs each in the third and fourth innings. The team would clamp down on defense to hold the Yellowjackets scoreless for the final three innings.
The Lady Rams mounted a late rally when Lynch hit a sacrifice pop up to second base that scored Lane. In the seventh inning, the Lady Rams struck again when Lane hit an RBI single to left field that scored freshman Precious Marsh.
The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the afternoon. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
