WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (7-7) picked up a key win when the team took a 3-2 win over the Bloomsburg Huskies (5-2), Thursday afternoon. The win kicked off the 2014 WSSU Softball Mania Tournament at Washington Park. The Lady Rams took the win behind a great performance on both sides of the ball.
The Lady Rams finished the game with nine hits and held the Huskies to just two runs on eight hits. The Lady Rams were able to take advantage of a pair of Huskie fielding errors as well. WSSU junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin led the way with a three-for-three effort at the plate with a run scored and two RBI. Freshman utility Chyna Riley added a two-for-four effort with an RBI as well.
After allowing a third inning run to the Huskies, the Lady Rams answered in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. A Ruffin RBI single scored junior shortstop Monet Daly. Riley followed the effort with another RBI single that forced a fielding error by the Huskies that scored Ruffin. The Lady Rams scored the winning run in the sixth inning when Ruffin hit an RBI single up the middle to score freshman pitcher Tiffany Massey. From there, the Lady Rams turned up their defensive efforts, allowing just one more Huskie run in the seventh inning to seal the win.
WSSU freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett (3-5) took the pitching win, throwing all seven innings and allowing just two runs on eight hits. She finished the day with nine strikeouts.
