Rams Offense Steps Up in 10-3 Win Over Virginia Union

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-16, 3-1 CIAA) kept up their strong offense when the team took a 10-3 win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers (1-5, 1-3 CIAA), Sunday. The Rams took the game behind a great offensive effort in the game.

Offensively, the Rams had one of their best efforts of the season. As a team, the Rams totaled 13 hits in the game and turned them into 10 runs while defensively, the team held the Lady Panthers to just three runs. Sophomore outfielder Jasmine Holloman led the team's batting effort, going three-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI. Fellow sophomore short stop Destiny Snipes added a two-for-four performance with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Rams took the win behind some big innings of play. The team scored four first inning runs, one second inning run, and then five fifth-inning runs to claim the victory. Junior outfielder Anna Marino got things started with an RBI double that scored Holloman. Marino was then brought in by an RBI single from senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett. She was then able to score on a VUU fielding error. Freshman Sydney Brown capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Destiny Snipes and left the Rams on top, 4-0. The team added another score in the second inning when Marino hit an RBI single that scored Holloman once again.

The Rams were challenged in the fourth inning when the team allowed three runs to the Lady Panthers that cut the WSSU lead down to two runs, 5-3 before a big fifth inning put the game away. The scoring began with a Snipes two-run home run Senior Samantha Gibbs added two more runs with a two-RBI single that scored Demko and sophomore Melissa Carillo. Holloman rounded out the scoring when she hit an RBI single that scored Demko and left the Rams on top, 10-3.

Hargett (5-10) took the pitching victory, going six innings with three runs scored (three earned). She also recorded four strikeouts with just one walk.
