CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-17, 3-2 CIAA) gave it all, but the team fell short when the team took a 6-5 nine-inning loss to the Bowie State Bulldogs (7-8, 4-1 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. Playing in their third game of the day, the Rams battled hard, but fell short in the final game of the 2017 CIAA Round-Up.
The Rams played well on both sides of the ball in the tough loss. WSSU sophomore outfielder Jasmine Holloman led the way, going three-for-four at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Senior third base Rebecca Demko added a two-for-four effort with a run scored and an RBI.
The Rams had to rally to stay in the game. The team allowed three early runs to the Bulldogs before Holloman hit a three-RBI double that scored senior Samantha Gibbs, Demko, and sophomore short stop Destiny Snipes and tied the game to send it into extra innings. The Rams scored in the eighth inning when senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored junior outfielder Anna Marino to put the Rams on top, 4-3, but Bowie State answered with an eighth-inning run of their own and tied the game, 4-4. The Rams went ahead once more with Demko hitting an RBI single to score Snipes in the top of the ninth inning. However, Bowie State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch the win and to hand the Rams the 6-5 loss.
Hargett (5-11) took the pitching loss, going 8.0 innings. She finished the game with six runs allowed (three earned) with five strikeouts and just two walks.
The Rams will have a while to rest as the team will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Anderson (S.C) Trojans. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (33^) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
