Rams Held Back in 9-1 Loss to West Virginia State

PEMBROKE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-1) staged a late rally, but the effort was not quite enough as the team took an 8-6 loss to the Shippensburg Raiders (1-1) on the opening day of the 2018 UNC Pembroke Invitational, Friday afternoon. After falling behind, 6-2, the Rams scored four runs late in the game, but allowed a pair of runs to the Raiders to take the hard-fought loss.

The Rams took the loss in spite of a solid overall team effort in the game. As a team, the Rams scored six runs on six hits. WSSU sophomore first base Erica Davis led the way for the team with a two-for-three batting effort with a run scored and three runs batted in (RBI) in the game. She did her damage with a triple and a home run. Freshman Alexis Washenko added a two-for-four batting effort.

The Rams opened the game with an opening inning run Davis hit a two-run home run to leave the Rams on top, 2-0. The Raiders answered with five second inning runs to go along with a third inning score to leave the Rams trailing, 6-2. The Rams bounced back in the fifth inning with an RBI triple from Davis that scored junior Jasmine Holloman. The team added three more sixth inning runs to tie the game, 6-6. Unfortunately, a WSSU wild pitch and an RBI single by the Raiders left the Rams trailing 8-6 heading into the seventh inning. The Rams were not able to score in the seventh inning to take the loss.

WSSU freshman Tia Robinson (0-1) took the pitching loss, going all six innings with 11 hits allowed and eight runs (none unearned). She also had a strikeout out.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-1 overall. The team would go on to complete the day at the 2018 UNC Pembroke Invitational with a game against West Virginia State.
