Rams' Rally Not Enough in 10-8 Loss to Mount Olive

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-20) staged a late rally, but the team could not hold off the Mount Olive Trojans (16-20) in a 10-8 loss. The Rams allowed four seventh-inning runs to the Trojans to take the hard-fought loss.

The loss came in spite of a strong overall effort by the team. The Rams totaled nine hits in the game, just one fewer than the Trojans. WSSU freshman Ryanne Oakes led the way with a two-for-three batting effort with a home run, a run scored and three RBI. Sophomore pitcher Erica Davis added a home run of her own with two RBI.

After falling behind early, the Rams staged a late rally to claim a lead, but the team could not hold off the Trojans as they took the loss. The Rams allowed three second inning runs to the Trojans as well as a fourth inning run. However, the team rallied with six fourth inning runs. Davis hit a two-run home run which was followed by an RBI single from senior outfielder Anna Marino, and closed out by a three-run home run from freshman designated player Ryanne Oakes that left the Rams on top, 6-4. Mount Olive tied the game in the fifth inning before the Rams added two more sixth-inning runs. Freshman pinch runner Destiny Middleton scored on a double steal which was followed by an RBI single from freshman centerfielder Nyla Howard. The effort left the Rams on top 8-6. However, the team allowed four seventh-inning runs to the Trojans to take the loss.

Davis (4-10) took the pitching loss for the Rams. She went all seven innings with 10 runs allowed (eight earned) on 10 hits. She also recorded five strikeouts.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 5-20. The team will return to action, Friday when the team heads to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on the Fayetteville State Broncos in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) doubleheader.
