Rams Take a 4-3 Loss at Claflin

ORANGEBURG, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (24-5, 12-1 CIAA) took their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) loss of the season when the team took a 4-3 loss to the Claflin Panthers (27-13, 13-0 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After falling behind early, the Rams staged a late rally, but the team fell short in the tough loss.

The Rams took the loss in spite of a great effort by both teams. As a team, the Rams totaled four hits, but they allowed the Panthers to get just four hits in the game. WSSU junior pitcher Erica Davis had the best batting performance of the day as she went two-for-three at the plate with a double. Freshman first base Aniyah Jones added an RBI sacrifice fly and a two-run home run in the game.

After allowing the Panthers to take an early lead, the Rams staged a late rally, but the effort was not quite enough as the team fell short. The Rams allowed three third inning runs, the Rams struck back in the fourth inning when Jones hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score fellow freshman Shauntaja Dedecker. The Rams allowed another run to the Panthers in the fifth inning. The Rams staged a rally in the sixth inning when Jones hit a two-run home run that cut the WSSU deficit down to just one run. However, it was all that the team could muster as the Rams took the hard-fought loss.

Davis (11-4) took the pitching loss. She started the game and she went all seven innings. She finished the game with four runs allowed (four earned). She also had three strikeouts.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 24-5 overall and 12-1 in CIAA. The two teams would go on the complete the doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
