Rams Advance to Championship Round of 2019 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament with a 10-0 Win Over Virginia State

 

SALEM, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (31-10) advanced to the championship round of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Tournament with a 10-0 win over the Virginia State Trojans (19-22), Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams combined some dominating defense with an overpowering offense to claim the win. As a team, the Rams notched 11 hits in the game while holding the Trojans to just two hits. WSSU junior pitcher Erica Davis led the way for the Rams when she went two-for-two at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI in the game. Freshman first base Aniyah Jones went two-for-three at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

Winston-Salem State got their scoring done early and often as the team scored in four of the five innings played in the game. The Rams got things started in the first inning when senior outfielder Destiny Snipes hit a solo home run in the first inning of play. Junior Shauntaja Dedecker added two more runs with a two-RBI single that was then followed by an RBI sacrifice fly out that capped the Rams' 4-0 start to the game. WSSU added another run in the third inning when redshirt-freshman short stop Jasmine McCain hit an RBI ground out that left the Rams on top, 5-0 after the third inning. In the fourth inning, the Rams really broke out as they scored five runs to seal the victory. Davis got things started with a two-RBI double that was followed by an RBI double from Jones. The Rams added another score on a VSU throwing error and the team capped the game with an RBI double from McCain in the fourth inning. From there, the Rams kept their strong defensive play going to seal the victory.

Davis (13-6) took the pitching win. She put on a dominating performance as she threw all five innings of the game with no runs allowed on just two hits with a strikeout.

With the win, the Rams advance to the championship round of the 2019 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament. The team will face the winner of the Claflin/Virginia State game. The 2019 CIAA Softball Championship Game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at the James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Va.
