WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A late-inning three-run rally by the Lady Rams fell just short as the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks earned a 5-4 victory over Winston-Salem State University at Southpark Field on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader.
The Lady Rams opened the afternoon's scoring as WSSU took an early 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning.
The score would change the very next inning as UMES belted four hits and scored five runs en route to a 5-1 lead.
UMES saw success in the top of the fourth inning as an Ashley Boswell wild pitch, an RBI single by second baseman Shadawn Page, and a two-out, two-RBI double scored the only runs of the game for the Lady Hawks.

The Rams rally would end following a UMES fielding error at first base that pushed the Lady Rams to within one run at 5-4 on a strikeout.
Shore held UMES scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning, but WSSU could not earn base-runners in the Lady Rams' bid to tie the score at 5-5 as the Lady Hawks earned the narrow 5-4 victory.
The loss drops the Lady Rams to 1-7 overall while UMES moves to 1-0 on the season with the win.
The two teams return to action at 2:45 pm when they square off in the second game of a scheduled seven-inning doubleheader.
