Lady Rams Run Out of Gas in 15-1 Loss to Howard

Feb. 24, 2007

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-7) had little left as the team took a 15-1 loss to the Howard Lady Bison (2-3), Saturday. Playing in their third straight game of the day, the team struggled on both sides of the ball giving up a season-high 15 runs in the loss. Though the team was solid for the majority of the contest, they could not overcome three big innings by the Lady Bison that put the game out of the Lady Rams' reach.

The Lady Rams fell behind early, giving up four runs to the Lady Bison in the first inning, but recovered to home Howard scoreless for the next three innings. However, an eight-run fourth inning for Howard did most of the damage. Though the Lady Rams would plate a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, three more Howard runs in the top of the fifth inning sealed the WSSU loss.

A fourth inning triple by freshman centerfielder Devyn Gillette was the only WSSU hit of the contest. However, the run threat was cancelled one play later as she was called out at home on a failed squeeze bunt attempt. Sophomore outfielder Domica Scott reached first base on the fielder's choice, but Gillette was called out on a throw from the pitcher to first and then back home.

The loss drops the Lady Rams to 2-7 on the season. The team will next take the field on next Friday, when they face the UMES Hawks in the opening round of the North Carolina A&T Invitational Tournament.
