Winston-Salem, NC - It took eight innings, but the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams softball team was able to split a doubleheader with visiting Lees-McRae on Wednesday evening as they earned a 5-4 victory in the second game of two at Southpark field in Winston-Salem, NC.
The Lady Rams, who fell 4-1 in the first game, came out early as they tallied one run in the first, seventh and eighth innings, and a pair of runs in the fifth en route to a 5-4 victory.
The Lady Rams, who forced an eighth inning when pitcher Heather Davis (Sr./5'11"/Detroit, MI) scored with two outs in the seventh, were able to hold Lees-McRae scoreless in the final inning of play to earn the win.
The eighth inning looked to hold nothing promising for the Lady Rams as WSSU's first two batters were retired easily. However, Heather Davis fought off seven pitches and reached on a walk to set up her winning run. She advanced to second on a passed ball and was driven home when Toyia Vaughan (So./5'6"/Burlington, NC) smashed a double to center field, giving the Lady Rams the victory and the split of the doubleheader.
With the victory, the Lady Rams, and winning pitcher Heather Davis, improve to 3-2 overall. WSSU returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 11:00 am when they host NCAA national-powerhouse Bloomsburg University in the first game of a two-game doubleheader.
