HAMPTON, VA - Big innings continued to plague the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-16) softball team, Saturday as the team took a 12-1 loss to the Hampton Pirates (10-4) in the opening round of the 2007 Lady Pirate Invitational Tournament. The Lady Rams battled for the entire contest, but could not overcome six runs in the third inning by the host Lady Pirates.
Freshman outfielder Devyn Gilette and sophomore pitcher Amber Shore combined for all four Winston-Salem State hits in the game. Each player went two-for-three from the plate in the loss. Sophomore outfielder Domica Scott scored the sole WSSU run of the game on a Hampton error in the bottom of the third inning.
Shore (3-9) started in the circle for the Lady Rams going three innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits. Freshman Ashley Boswell pitched the final two innings of the game.
The Lady Rams will get an early start tomorrow as they will face the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in a 9:00 a.m. game with the winner facing North Carolina Central in an 11:00 a.m. game.
