Two-Run First Inning Propels WSSU Softball To Victory Over BSU

March 24, 2004

Box Score

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams used a two-run first inning to help defeat the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University by the score of 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon in CIAA Softball action at Southpark Field to earn their third-consecutive victory.

Winston-Salem State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when they used two hits, and two stolen bases to tally a pair of runs, their only two of the contest. Curtina Barrett smashed a two-out double to left center field and drove in both runs to give the Lady Rams the early lead heading into the second inning and WSSU never looked back despite failing to score in the remaining six innings of play.

The early offense, coupled with Heather Davis' stellar work on the mound, helped the Lady Rams to keep the potent BSU offense at bay. Davis and the Lady Rams would allow only a lone hit and four base-runners in the game en route to the win.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 6-6 overall and pull even at .500 on the season. The Lady Rams improve to 3-0 in the CIAA overall (0-0 Western Division) and are currently in third place in the Western Division as they have yet to play a division contest. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 3-4 on the season and 3-2 in the CIAA with the loss.

The two teams return to action at 3:00 pm for the second game of the doubleheader.
