The Floodgates Open As WSSU Hammers BSU 17-1 In Game Two

March 24, 2004

Box Score

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams softball team started the second game of a doubleheader versus the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University the same way they started the first game...red hot. The Lady Rams used four first-inning hits to generate three runs in the opening frame as they jumped out early in a contest that would ultimately lead to WSSU's fourth straight win, a 17-1 decision over the visiting Lady Bulldogs in a CIAA league contest at Southpark Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The first inning of play saw the Lady Bulldogs fill the bases with runners despite only recording a single hit. With the bases loaded, BSU threatened to score, but WSSU starting pitcher Heather Davis used a pair of strikeouts to retire the side and help the Lady Rams escape the top of the inning without damage.

Conversely, the Lady Rams used "small ball" to generate base-runners and scoring chances. They bunted for a pair of hits, used a pair of stolen bases and benefited from a passed ball and wild pitch as they tallied three runs on four hits, all with two outs in the inning enabling them to finish the first inning of play holding a 3-0 lead.

It would only get worse for the Lady Bulldogs as the Lady Rams put a seven spot on the scoreboard in the second inning, recording seven runs on four hits to increase their lead to 10-0 after two innings, ultimately putting 17 runs on the board on 15 hits.

Earning the victory for WSSU, and recording her second straight one-hit game, was WSSU's Heather Davis. With the victory she improves to 7-6 on the season as she has made every start for the Lady Rams in 2004.

With the win, the Lady Rams have won four consecutive games and appear to be peaking at the right time. They improve to 7-6 overall on the season and 4-0 in the CIAA. The Lady Rams return to action tomorrow afternoon as they play host to the St. Augustine's College Lady Falcons in a softball doubleheader. The pair of games will mark the first two Western Division contests for WSSU this season. The first pitch is slated for a 1:00 pm start. With the loss the Lady Bulldogs fall to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA. Bowie State will have the remainder of the work week off as they resume play this weekend.
