Lady Rams Defeat St. Augustine's College By The Score Of 5-2

March 25, 2004

Box Score

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams came into the first game of two versus St. Augustine's College looking to win their first Western Division contest of the season. They did just that on Thursday afternoon as they improved to 1-0 in the Western Division (8-6 overall) by defeating the Lady Falcons by the score of 5-1 in front of a large crowd at Southpark Field.

The first inning of play was uneventful, but the Lady Rams wasted no time in the second inning of play as starting pitcher Heather Davis helped her own cause by drilling a double down the right field line that drove in a run giving WSSU the early 1-0 lead. However, the Lady Rams would commit two costly base-running errors in the same inning and fail to score any more than a lone run as they held the narrowest of leads at 1-0 heading into the third inning of play.

The top of the fourth inning would see the visiting Lady Falcons strike back when St. Augustine's shortstop Brianna Billups scored off of a Heather Davis wild pitch to knot the score at 1-1. The Lady Ram defense would respond however, and WSSU held the Lady Falcons to the lone run as the two teams headed to the bottom of the fourth inning with one run each.

The bottom of the fourth inning saw the Lady Rams respond by recording their second run of the game when Shannon Davis scored on a Tamika Ferguson single to left center field to give WSSU the 2-1 lead heading into the final three innings of play.

The Lady Rams were not finished, as SaRhonda Hawkins scored on a LaKelsha Carney bloop single to center field to give WSSU their first multi-run lead of the afternoon in the very next inning of play. The Lady Rams tacked on yet another run with two outs in the inning, and WSSU led 4-1 heading into the sixth inning.

Despite not needing it, the Lady Rams tacked on another single run, and when St. Augustine's College failed to generate enough offense in the top of the seventh inning as they tallied only one run, the Lady Rams earned their fifth consecutive win.

Earning the victory was WSSU's Heather Davis who allowed one run on three hits in the game as she notched her eighth victory of the season, improving to 8-6 overall. Saddled with the loss was St. Augustine's Jennifer Lewis who falls to 7-5 overall with the loss.

With the win, WSSU improves to 8-6 overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. The win is the first for WSSU in the Western Division as they improve to 1-0 overall in the division. SAC falls to 8-5 overall (8-4 in the CIAA) and 5-2 in the Western Division.

The two teams will return to action in the second game of the CIAA league doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
