Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams improved to 6-13 overall on Saturday morning as they defeated the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings 7-5 in the first game of a CIAA softball doubleheader that took two hours and 17 minutes to complete at Southpark Field in Winston-Salem, NC.
The Lady Rams started out the contest on a roll as they tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as well as tacking on a pair more in the bottom of the second inning as they opened up an early 5-1 lead.
Elizabeth City State would record three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the WSSU lead to only one run as the game would stay close for the remainder of the contest.
The game would be decided by the Lady Rams when the host team tallied one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to sneak out the win by the score of 7-5.
Earning the win for the Lady Rams was Shannon Davis who pitched a complete-game, six-hitter as she struck out six ECSU batters while walking only seven. With the win she improved to 3-5 overall in 2005.
The two teams return to the diamond at 2:00 PM when they will play the second and final game of the doubleheader.
