Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem State University's softball team is still undefeated in the CIAA as they handed the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University another loss on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a doubleheader by the score of 13-5 in a game that lasted only five innings.
The top of the first inning was one that the Lady Rams would just as soon forget as the visiting Lady Trojans smashed three hits and where the beneficiaries of an error en route to crossing home plate three times to take an early 3-0 lead for the second time on the afternoon as WSSU starting pitcher Amber Nance would face seven Lady Trojan batters in the first half an inning of play.
The Lady Rams however would battle back in the bottom half of the inning as they benefited from six walks as they scored three runs without recording a single hit. The patience of the WSSU hitters proved to be too much for VSU's Finkley who experienced control problems and walked the bases loaded before walking in three WSSU runners.
The bottom of the first inning spark quickly ignited the Lady Rams' offensive fires as WSSU opened up the game and took complete control, en route to their five-inning 13-5 win.
Amber Nance pitched her way to second victory of the season in as many days as she improves to 2-0 overall.
With the victory, the Lady Rams improve to 13-6 overall and stay flawless at 10-0 in the CIAA. The Lady Trojans fall to 13-17 overall and 11-5 in the CIAA with the loss.
WSSU returns to action on March 30th, 2004 when they will face the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. The first pitch of the CIAA league doubleheader is slated for 4:00 pm.
