BALTIMORE, MD - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (6-21) held off a surging Morgan State Lady Bears team to score a 5-4 win at Randazzo Park in Baltimore, Maryland. After jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, the Lady Rams had to play some clutch defense to secure the win and pull out the doubleheader sweep, the first doubleheader sweep of the season for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams scored four runs in the first two innings plating one run in the first inning, followed by a big three-run second inning. A sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Leslie Hollis drove in freshman Lonnie Jones for the first run of the game. Jones, junior Domica Scott, and freshman Kendall Sutton each drove in one run each in the second inning to put the Lady Rams on top, 4-0. Freshman Ashley Boswell scored the final Lady Ram run in the fifth inning on a Morgan State fielding error. Morgan State was able to score two runs each in the sixth and seventh inning, but the WSSU defense held off the Lady Bears attack. Freshman Whitney Hall got the last out of the game on an unassisted force out that sealed the win for the Lady Rams.
Boswell capped a solid pitching performance in game one of the doubleheader by going 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored in the game for the best individual effort from the plate for the Lady Rams.
Sophomore Amber Shore (4-11) scored the win for the Lady Rams pitching all seven innings allowing four runs on nine Morgan State hits. She also added five strikeouts in the win.
The Lady Rams won't be able to celebrate long as the team will face Howard tomorrow in an afternoon doubleheader.
