Lady Rams Pull Out Dramatic 5-1 Extra Inning Win Over Florida A&M

March 29, 2008

Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (14-9) scored a huge win this afternoon when the team defeated the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (8-26), Saturday. The Lady Rams scored four eighth inning runs to pull out the win after holding the Lady Rattlers, traditionally one of the most productive teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to just one run in the game.

WSSU junior pitcher Amber Shore led the WSSU effort, allowing just four hits to the Lady Rattlers with eight strikeouts. At the plate, the Lady Rams scattered just five team hits in the game, with freshman catcher Kayla Woodbury, freshman outfielder Candace Spinks, and junior infielder Kendall Sutton all driving in runs in the win.

Florida A&M scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk. The Lady Rams would respond three innings later when WSSU sophomore Lonnie Jones forced a FAMU error that scored junior infielder Whitney Hall. The Lady Rams would go on to hold the Lady Rattlers scoreless for the rest of the contest and set the stage for the team's extra-inning outbreak.

The Lady Rams would have to go into an extra inning to break the 1-1 tie and the team would respond in a big way scoring four unanswered runs. It was a Sutton double that would break the tie and put the Lady Rams ahead 2-1. Spinks and Woodbury would each drive in runs while a FAMU error would allow the final two WSSU runs of the game.

The two teams would go on to face off in game two of the double-header.
