Raleigh, NC - Despite giving up six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday afternoon in Raleigh, NC, the Lady Rams' softball team was able to hold on for a narrow one-run, 18-17 win over the Saint Augustine's College Lady Falcons in the first game of a CIAA softball league doubleheader at Oakwood Park.
The two teams started out the contest slowly as both squads recorded only one run each over the first two innings of play until the Rams exploded with a six-run third-inning outburst that put them comfortably ahead of the host-team Lady Falcons by the score of 7-1.
The Lady Rams and Lady Falcons would then trade multiple-run innings for nearly the remainder of the contest as the game's outcome would prove to be in doubt until the very last retired batsman.
With the Lady Rams holding a one-run lead with one out remaining in the game, Shannon Davis retired the Lady Falcons with a lazy pop-up to shallow center field as WSSU improved to 7-14 overall with the win.
Shannon Davis earned the win as she pitched a complete-game 12-hitter. Davis walked eight Lady Falcons while striking out only one.
The two teams return to action at 3:00 PM as they square off in the final game of the doubleheader.
