Raleigh, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams softball team used an 11-run sixth-inning to earn a 20-16 win over the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College on Tuesday afternoon in the second and final game of a CIAA softball doubleheader at Oakwood Park in Raleigh, NC.
Both team started out the game hot as the Lady Rams and Lady Falcons recorded four runs each in the second game's opening inning.
The Lady Falcons' bats stayed hot as Saint Augustine's tallied seven more runs in the bottom of the third inning as they looked to put the game on cruise control the rest of the way and easily record the win.
However, the Lady Rams had other ideas as WSSU would follow one-run fourth and fifth innings with an 11-run sixth inning en route to the 20-16 CIAA softball league win.
The 11-run inning is WSSU's largest single-inning offensive outburst of the 2005 season and helped to earn the Lady Rams a two-game sweep over the Lady Falcons, which is something that WSSU has done only one other time this season.
Following the 11-run offensive explosion, WSSU pitcher SaRhonda Hawkins, who came on in relief of Shannon Davis in the fourth inning, cruised to the win as she allowed only two total runs over the sixth and seventh innings, helping to move the Lady Rams to 8-14 overall.
WSSU will return to action on Saturday, April 2nd, 2005 as they play host to Livingstone College in an important CIAA softball doubleheader.
