Lady Rams Rally For 7-3 Win Over South Carolina State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams (7-23) battled back from an early deficit to take a 7-4 win over the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (2-28) in game one of a doubleheader at South Park Field. The Lady Rams scored four sixth inning runs to pull out the win, the team's third win in the last five games.

 

The Lady Rams found themselves in an early deficit after giving up a pair of South Carolina State runs in the second inning. Despite the rough start, the Lady Rams held SCSU with just the two runs over the next four innings while scoring three runs in the fourth inning and taking a 3-2 lead. Freshman Lonnie Jones scored on a Lady Bulldog wild pitch, followed by a two-RBI double by sophomore designated player Amber Shore.

 

The game wasn't over; however, with South Carolina State scoring another run in the sixth inning that tied the game. The Lady Rams responded to the SCSU challenge by scoring four sixth inning runs that sealed the game. Shore added her third RBI of the game on a seventh inning single to start the rally while junior Domica Scott drove in the second run of the inning with a single that, combined with an SCSU fielding error plated a pair of WSSU runs. Scott would then cap the rally, scoring on a wild pitch.


 

 

 

For the game, the Lady Rams scored seven runs on eight hits and forced five South Carolina State errors. It was sophomore Amber Shore had the best individual effort going 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI in the win. Freshman pitcher Ashley Boswell (3-11) pitched the way to the WSSU win allowing six hits and just three earned runs with nine strikeouts.

 

The two teams would get back to action twenty minutes later in game two of the doubleheader.
