Raleigh, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears did something on Monday afternoon that no other team in the CIAA team has done all season thus far...they beat the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams in a league softball contest. The Lady Bears handed WSSU a 10-2 loss in five innings in the first game of a CIAA doubleheader at Sanderford Road Park in Raleigh, NC to drop the Lady Rams to 14-1 in the CIAA and 17-7 overall.
The Lady Rams struggled at the plate as they earned a pair of hits with only Heather Davis and Toyia Vaughn earning a trip to the base paths in the contest. WSSU did not help their own cause as they committed three errors in the first two innings of play en route to the loss.
The Lady Bears on the other hand tallied 10 runs on eight hits and benefited from the Lady Rams' fielding woes as they stole three bases and walked six times.
WSSU starting pitcher Heather Davis was saddled with the loss dropping to 12-7 on the season as she gave up eight earned runs and a pair of doubles on the afternoon. Recording the win for the Lady Bears was Welch who, despite walking nine Lady Rams, allowed only two hits and two runs while striking out five.
The Lady Rams fall to 17-7 overall and 14-1 in the CIAA (6-0 Western Division). The Lady Bears improve to 14-12 overall and 14-1 in the CIAA with the victory.
The two teams, both perennial CIAA softball powers, meet again at 3:00 pm for the second game of the doubleheader.
