Elizabeth City, NC - The Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University did something that no CIAA team had done to the WSSU all season on Friday...they handed the Lady Rams two CIAA losses in a row. On Friday afternoon the Lady Rams were defeated by ECSU by the score of 4-3 in the second of a pair of CIAA league softball contests in Elizabeth City, NC. The Lady Vikings got a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the victory from WSSU.
The Lady Rams, who lost the first game of the afternoon by the score of 3-0 were again without the services of starting catcher and two time All-CIAA selection Shannon Davis, as well as starting first baseman LeAndrea Suggs who were both in Houston, TX competing for the first ever NCAA Women's Bowling National Championship.
With the smaller roster, and lack of offensive power, the Lady Rams were defeated for the second time on the afternoon, something that no conference team has done all season long.
The Lady Rams trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth inning where they would mount a comeback. WSSU earned tied the game in the top of the seventh inning at 3-3 and forced the Lady Vikings to respond. Respond is exactly what ECSU did and they used a walk off single with two runners on and one out to steal the 4-3 win.
Dropping her first game of the season in the loss was Amber Nance who falls to 6-1 on the season. Nance pitched a ten hitter and allowed only four runs, but was saddled with the loss.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 20-9 overall and 17-3 in the CIAA. However, WSSU remains undefeated in the CIAA Western Division as they look towards a possible #1 seed in next weekend's CIAA Softball Championship and yet another CIAA Western Division regular-season crown.
WSSU will return to action at 3:30 pm on Monday, April 12th, 2004 when they will face off against the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University in a pair of CIAA league softball contests. The doubleheader will determine who will be awarded the regular-season CIAA Western Division crown, as well as determine the #1 seed in next weekend's CIAA Championship. The two games will be the last regular-season games for both teams in 2004.
