WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-18) had to shook off a slow start, but could not rally for the win in a 4-2 loss to the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (16-30), Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rams' defense kept the game close, but the squad could not get enough runs across the plate in the loss.
As a team, the Lady Rams totaled just four hits in the loss, while allowing 10 hits to the Lady Wildcats. However, the team's defensive efforts held the Lady Wildcats in check, but the three WSSU errors would prove costly in the loss as the Lady Rams allowed three unearned runs to the Lady Wildcats.
Four WSSU players recorded one hit each in the loss with freshman outfielder Candace Spinks and junior outfielder Devyn Gillette both recording a hit and an RBI in the loss. WSSU junior pitcher
The Lady Rams got off to a slow start, allowing two first inning runs to the Lady Wildcats on an early fielding error. The team would go allow another Lady Wildcat run in the third inning on an RBI single. Another B-CU RBI double would leave the Lady Rams trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning.
The Lady Rams would show their resolve, however, rallying with a pair of sixth inning runs to their deficit in half. A single by WSSU sophomore infielder Whitney Hall would break up the hitless effort by the Lady Rams. Sophomore outfielder Devyn Gillette would follow the hit with an RBI double to centerfield to drive in the first run of the game for the Lady Rams. Gillette would make it to third base, following a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman Desiree Ramirez. Spinks would then add an RBI single, scoring Gillette and leaving the Lady Rams behind 4-2. After cutting the deficit down to just two runs, the Lady Rams could not get any more runs across the plate and would end the day with the loss.
The Lady Rams will return to action this Wednesday when the team hosts the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
