Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams easily defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University 6-0 on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of play in the 2004 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament at Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte, NC.
The Lady Rams scored six runs on nine hits in the game with Shannon Davis and LaKelsha Carney each collecting a pair of hits in the contest.
In a bit of strategy, WSSU Head Coach LaTaya Hilliard-Gray used number two starter Amber Nance in the contest to give number one starter Heather Davis more rest heading into the second round of play.
The gamble paid off for the Lady Rams as Nance helped her own cause by batting in two Lady Rams in the contest to lead the team in RBI. In addition to her prowess at the plate, Nance pitched a six strike-out, three-hit shutout, her fourth of the season in her seventh complete game of the year.
The Lady Rams, who improve to 21-7 with the win advance to the second round of the double-elimination format championship and will face off against the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University at 4:30 pm.
