Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams softball team could not recover from a first inning that saw them give up five runs to the third-seeded Eagles of North Carolina Central University as they fell in defeat by the score of 6-3 in second round CIAA Softball Championship Tournament Action from Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte, NC on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Rams, who cruised by Bowie State University by the score of 6-0 in first-round action earlier in the day faltered in the first inning of play as they surrendered five runs and were never able to recover.
The contest, one that was very physical and saw several knockdowns and numerous incidents of physical contact, was a heated affair that ultimately went in favor of the Lady Eagles.
Saddled with the loss was Heather Davis, who had not faced the Lady Eagles in the regular season. Davis and the Lady Rams were the victim of hot NCCU bats, and questionable fielding in the contest.
WSSU, the Western Division #1 seed will return to action on Friday morning at Hornet's Nest Park when they square off against the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings at 10:00 am as they attempt to become the second straight team to win the tournament from the loser's bracket. The Shaw University Lady Bears did exactly that last season.
The Lady Vikings swept a pair of games from WSSU this season in Elizabeth City, NC.
