Lady Rams Eliminate Lady Vikings Of ECSU In CIAA Softball Championship Action

April 16, 2004

Box Score

Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams avenged last week's pair of losses to the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Friday morning as they used an Amber Nance walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth-inning to defeat ECSU in CIAA Softball Championship consolation-bracket softball action at Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte, NC.

The Lady Rams, who opened the tournament with a 6-0 win over Bowie State, were relegated to the consolation bracket after falling in defeat to the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University yesterday afternoon.

The Lady Rams and Lady Vikings were both facing elimination in the contest, and ECSU tied the contest up in the top of the seventh inning and forced two extra frames of play with the score knotted at 3-3.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Lady Rams' second-team All-CIAA catcher Shannon Davis walked with two outs and brought starting pitcher Amber Nance to the plate. Nance ripped a two-strike single down the left field line and the stunned Lady Vikings could only watch in awe as Davis scored all the way from first to propel WSSU to the 4-3 win in extra innings.

WSSU, who improves to 21-11 overall in 2004 stays alive in the championship and advances to face the Lady Bears of Shaw University at 2:30 pm at Hornet's Nest Park. Earning the win was Nance who turned in an eight-hit, three strikeout performance.

The Lady Rams and Lady Bears split a pair of games in the regular season.
