Charlotte, NC - Winston-Salem State University's dream of capturing the 2004 CIAA Softball Championship was dashed on Friday afternoon as they were eliminated from postseason competition by the Lady Bears of Shaw University in consolation-bracket play at Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte, NC by the score of 6-1.
The Lady Rams and Lady Bears, who were both trying to stave off elimination after losses in Thursday's second-round entered into the contest knowing that the losing team's season would be over.
The two teams, who are both talented offensively and can score runs in bunches only tallied seven runs in the contest and combined to use five pitchers. The Lady Bears would be the brighter team offensively as they would record 10 hits and tally six runs en route to the 6-1 victory.
The Lady Rams, who have shelled opposing pitchers all season long would only earn four hits in the contest, versus a trio of Lady Bear's pitchers and struggled from the offensive side of the plate as they were saddled with the season-ending loss.
The Lady Rams finish the 2004 season with a 21-12 record overall and earned a 2004 CIAA Western Division regular-season title for the third time in the last five years.
Shaw stays alive and will face off against North Carolina Central University in the final softball game of the day at 5:30 pm.
