Lady Rams Rally Falls Short; WSSU Falls to Howard, 4-3

April 18, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-21) gave the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champions a run for their money, Friday afternoon, taking a 4-3 loss to the Howard Lady Bison (13-12). After falling behind, 4-0, the Lady Rams scored three seventh-inning runs to nearly rally for the win.

The Lady Rams gave up a pair of first inning runs on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk. The team gave up another run to the Lady Bison on an RBI double in the second inning to put the Lady Rams behind, 3-0. The team held the Lady Bison scoreless until the fifth inning on an RBI single that left the Lady Rams trailing 4-0.

It was in the seventh inning that the Lady Rams would make things interesting as the team opened the inning with a pair of extra-base hits. WSSU freshman catcher Kayla Woodbury would get the Lady Rams on the scoreboard with a lead-off home run, followed by a double by fellow freshman Whitney Wright. Junior pitcher Amber Shore would drive in the second WSSU score of the game with an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by junior infielder Desiree Ramirez to bring the Lady Rams to within one run, 4-3. The team's hopes would be dashed, however, as a groundout ended the WSSU threat.

As a team, the Lady Rams totaled six hits in the contest. Ramirez led the way for the Lady Rams, going 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Woodbury was 1-for-3 with the home run. WSSU junior Amber Shore took the loss pitching all six innings and holding Howard to just five hits and four earned runs.

The two teams would square off to complete the doubleheader, following game one.
