PETERSBURG, VA - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams softball team fell in defeat to the Virginia State University Lady Trojans by the score of 4-1 in opening-round CIAA Women's Softball Championship action from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Rams drew first blood in the contest as WSSU scored in the top half of the first inning en route to the early 1-0 lead.
WSSU pitcher Amber Shore held the Lady Trojans scoreless for the next three innings until the bottom of the fourth inning saw a pair of fielding errors and a walked batter help Virginia State put three runs on the board as they pushed ahead to a lead that they would never relinquish.

Adding insult to injury was Tiffany Coggins' solo home-run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Lady Trojans earned the 4-1 victory.
The loss drops WSSU to 19-19 on the season (17-5 CIAA) and relegates the Lady Rams to the consolation bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
WSSU will face the loser of the North Carolina Central vs. Shaw University contest while the Lady Trojans will face the winner of that same game. Both the Lady Rams and Lady Trojans will take to the diamond at 2:30 pm.
