Petersburg, VA - The Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University shocked the CIAA softball world on Thursday afternoon in Petersburg, VA in 2005 CIAA Softball Championship action as they defeated the #1-seed Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University by the score of 4-0 in first-round action. The Lady Rams of WSSU fell in defeat to the Lady Trojans by the score of 14-9 as WSSU will now face elimination in a losers-bracket game at 3:30 PM.
The #4-seed Lady Vikings earned a win over North Carolina Central as hot ECSU bats propelled the Lady Vikings to the win.
In the second game of the day, the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State defeated Bowie State University by the score of 7-3 as FSU now advances to face the #1 seed in the CIAA's Eastern Division, the Shaw University Lady Bears as Shaw easily defeated Johnson C. Smith University 14-6.
The Lady Rams were never able to get into the game versus the hot bats of Virginia State as WSSU senior pitcher Shannon Davis was hit with 14 runs, 10 of them earned, in the loss.
Consolation bracket play will begin at 3:30 PM with Johnson C. Smith taking on Bowie State and WSSU taking on North Carolina Central. The winners of each game will continue on while the loser's season will be completed.
The winner's bracket will resume play at 5:00 PM with Shaw facing Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State facing Virginia State.
WSSU's loss drops them to 12-21 overall while Shannon Davis drops her season-record to 9-13 overall.
